SAN SALVADOR DE JUJUY
A CITY EMBRACED BY TWO RIVERS
The Capital of the province is only 13 kms far from Yala. It is surrounded by the rivers Big and Xibi Xibi that embrace the commercial and historical center of the city. Called The Little Silver Cup because of the shape of the deep valley that sheltters it and surrounded by mountainous cords of green covered hills of las Yungas San Salvador has some refine and ancient buildings of great architectural value.
Presidential Palace House of the provincial government it is sited in front of the main Plaza. It is a magnificent French style building which presents in its front gardens marvel sculptures of the famous sculptress Lola Mora.
The Lounge of the Flag in the first floor, is an enclosure regally decorated, where the the cloth of the first flag creates by Belgrano is kept like a nacional treasure . It was donated by him to Jujuy , in recognition to the people of Jujuy for their sacrifices during the memorable Exodus Jujeño of 1812. The jujeños were also the first Argentinos in swearing loyalty to the Flag hoisted by the General, and blessed by the Canonigo Gorriti and for that Jujuy was named Abanderada de la Patria.
Cathedral Church in front of the main square, was constructed by Francisco de Argañaraz, founder of San Salvador, in 1593 but the actual building was constructed approximately by 1765. In its interior there are art pieces of great value like the magnificent Pulpit handcrafted by Indians of the Jesuitic missions in 1761 carved in relief, in wood of ñandubay and cedar, and covered with legitimate gold foils , representing the gospels and narrating the life, passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ .It can still be visited and admired ,its beauty under the lights of the temple surprising those who contemplate it.
Provincial museum Lavalle Sited in the street of the same name, the Museum Lavalle exhibits different objects that give testimony of the Argentine history and is located in the former casona where the General Juan Galo Lavalle waskilled.. Itisa colonial style house , with seven rooms of permanent exhibition where documents, banners, firearms, swords, ancient furniture, suits of epoch and objects of religious art.can be observed.
Teatro Mitre Born with the 20th century the theatre Mitre is located in the downtown in the corner of Alvear and Lamadrid Streets . Of neoclassic italian style, is nowadays the most ancient existing theatre in the Argentina and a real architectural jewel . This magnificent coliseum with form of horse-shoe is known internationally for the beauty of its building and its unsurpassable acoustics.
San Francisco Church Placed in the center of the city, two blocks from the Catedral . The current Churchs building was begun in 1925, being actually the third construction. In a Corinthian classic style, it possesses seven altars of Carrara's marble and a splendid major altar where there are very ancient images of Cristian Saints made of carved wood of great perfection. The Pulpit of San Francisco, previous to that of the Church Cathedral, was done totally in Jujuy and it personifies the real and legitimate colonial Argentine culture.
